Amazing Spokane Fair

I was surprised when I went to the Spokane Country Fair this week, because there were a lot of differences to fairs or festivals in Japan. It was the wonderful time. I enjoyed crazy rides, delicious foods, and window shopping.

First of all, the rides were really crazy. I described they are crazy, because I was really scared riding them. There were a lot of rides. For example, roller coasters, Viking, and so on. We don’t have Carnival Rides in Japan, so I couldn’t believe that they moved so quickly from place to place. Almost all the rides were scary rides, but I was fine. However only one ride made me scared and I felt bad. I forgot that ride’s name, because I didn’t have inner reserves to notice that name. I entered the small box with my friend. Suddenly the box turned round and round and shook and shook and shook...I can’t describe it correctly, but my friend just said “It was violent.” I injured my back. In Japan I have never seen such a crazy ride and I never want to ride that again.

Second, I ate a lot of delicious and unexpected foods. I was surprised, because we don’t have such international food shops at Japanese festivals. I saw a lot of shops that sold pizza, hamburger, roasted corn, kebabs, elephant ears, pasta, tortilla etc. I ate a roasted corn and a pumpkin donut. The roasted corn was really sweet and delicious. My friends ate big hamburgers. Although I regret a little that I didn’t eat elephant ears, because we don’t have that in Japan. If I have a chance to eat elephant ears in the USA, I want to try them the next time. We enjoyed the food very much.

Third, I saw a lot of different shops that sold various things. Some shops sold traditional clothes, some shops sold appliances and some shops sold toys. There was no unity, but that the chaotic atmosphere made me excited. I didn’t buy anything, but I enjoyed window shopping. Some clerks spoken to us and we also enjoyed talking with them. It was a good experience for me to talk with people who are not related to MFWI. All of these shops were really interesting.

There were a lot of surprising things at the fair and I was exhausted after coming back to the dorm. I enjoyed this Country Fair very much. All people laughed and I also laughed a lot. I want to go to Country Fair again, but hopefully the weekend is better.

Fabulous Southwest Trip

The Southwest trip was absolutely amazing because I leaned the culture of the area a lot. I spent 7 days in the southwest and I impressed by people who live there and by their culture. These things were totally different from Japan and the people there preserved their traditions carefully. I talk to a lot of Americans and I saw wonderful nature during the trip. There are three absolutely wonderfu and amazing places that I enjoyed.     First, I went to a lot of museums and all of them were very interesting. I especially liked The Museum of International Folk Art. The museum has more than 130,000 objects from more than 100 countries! My favorite object was a smiling skeleton doll. This object’s theme was Day of The Dead. When I saw it, I remembered COCO which is a Pixar movie. I also liked The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist and she painted a lot of flowers and nature. I think her paintings are brimming with kindness ...

Respectable Voice of The Japanese American

Respectable Voice of The Japanese American Chisato Fujii             When I saw this poem, I felt strong feeling of this poet like “I am an American,” and I also felt this poet’s voice like “Why am I not treated as an American?” I’ve never lived in this period of world war Ⅱ , and of course, I’ve never experienced this suffering and war, but I could feel people’s voice of this period thanks to this poet. Without these Japanese Americans’ voices, I couldn’t feel and understand their feeling and thought. When I understand this poem’s meaning, this poem made me sad, but I also understood Japanese Americans were proud of themselves in the middle of the war. I respect them and am proud.

My Unbelievable Southwest Trip

I experienced a lot of amazing things for seven days with my absolutely wonderful teachers and friends from October 15-21 and learned a lot of Southwest culture, history, and nature. For example, we went to about 12 museums and facilities, such as the Pueblo Cultural Center, the University of Mexico, and some churches in New Mexico and Arizona. Therefore, I kept busy on the trip, but it became something I have never experienced because everything I saw was new to me. There are three things that especially impressed me. First, I was attracted to the buildings of New Mexico. These were really different from Spokane, Boston, or Washington D.C. For example, I went to Old Town in Albuquerque. Then I noticed that almost all the buildings were made of adobe. Adobe means mud brick in Spanish, so the buildings I saw were brown and some parts were air blue. I felt comfortable there. I also saw a plaza and a church which were adobe style buildings. The plaza is the most central part in Old T...
