I went on the Southwest Trip and I had marvelous experiences. I visited many historic places, so I will talk about three of them.
I was looking forward to visiting the Loretto Chapel in Santa because this was my presentation topic in American West class. There were two interesting things for me. One of them was the atmosphere and exterior of this chapel. This chapel is in New Mexico, but it looked like a European building. It was not so big, but the altar was absolutely gorgeous and beautiful. Another was a miraculous staircase which is called St. Joseph's staircase. It is a very famous staircase because there is no visible support (no pole or glue) and nobody knows what kind of wood was used. I got a peculiar feeling from the staircase without a pole, but I was also impressed by the existence of this mysterious staircase.
Montezuma Castle is a cliff dwelling made of wood. This was used from 700 to 1125, so I was very surprised that old people could make a house at this unbalanced place. I thought there were no advantages to inhabit here, but there were advantages such as a protecting from animals or enemies, being warm in winter, and being cool in summer. It was surprising to me. In addition, some parts of the castle already came down, but some parts properly survived and it was extremely awesome. I was deeply affected by the techniques of the building and the endeavor of people. Moreover, Japan also has the cliff dwelling. However, it was made of wood, not mud, so the atmosphere was totally different. This difference was also interesting.
The Grand Canyon was fabulously huge and inexpressibly amazing! At first, I visited many view points with my friends. Each view point showed us different majestic scenes, so they affected me profoundly. At one point, we saw an old man we met at Wupatki National Monument the previous day and the EWU student. We talked with them and enjoyed it. This encounter was so nice. After that, we went on a bicycle trip. During cycling, we could see magnificent landscape. Visiting view points by bicycle was good exercise for me and I was able to feel the Grand Canyon closer. Therefore I recommend using a cycle at the Grand Canyon. From this trip, I learned the wonders of nature and how human beings are small.
In conclusion, I could see a lot of historic places and they were so excellent. This trip truly became a good treasure for me and I will never forget this experience as long as I live.
