A Meaningful Portland Trip

America is more gigantic than Japan, so there are many different culture in America. I went to East coast, Southwest and Seattle during this semester and last semester. I realize that each place has peculiar culture once more. This time, I could experience a lot of first things through Columbia George Discovery Center, three colleges and a great nature.

First of all, Columbia George Discovery Center showed me very interesting histories and an information. First, Steve, tour guide, told me about tools used by Lewis and Clark. I saw great tools such as sexton which is used to measure a road and a comps to make a map and implements to cure illness. At that time, they didn’t have a doctor, so Lewis studied medicine for two years to a trip. I saw these for the first time, and I couldn’t imagine people used them. However, I felt it was very difficult to live at the time. Next, Linda which was also guide showed me Junior which was great honored owl. I had watch a real owl only TV, so I was very excited to look at it. She explained the information of an owl. For example, the owl lives for thirteen years and the neck was too flexible, so it revolves an angle of 180. Third, I looked at and felt a lot of exhibitions. The unique points of this center is that people cloud touch exhibitions. I could ride on a canoe and enter in the tent where has a blanket made by fur of an animal. In addition, I wore a cloth of a pirate with my friends. Because of a real experience, I felt an important history was close to me.

Second, two colleges where I went were surprising me. I have visited to about seven colleges. Each college had a great individuality. Also Colombia Basin college, Reed college and Portland state university (PSU) is different from others. Columbia Basin college has a major has a major of wine and a great system which high school students can go there with. My partner said that it was good system. Also, it is unique to major in wine. Next, Reed college has peculiar grade system. There was no grade in this college. In stead of this, teachers give students a lot of comment, so students don’t have to care about their grade. Also, this college has a lot of nature and unique rooms, so students can relax everywhere. For example, there is a bench and a table drawn a chess board at a riverside, and there is MLLL room which has many comics. Moreover, PSU has a peculiar location. There is no border between this university and downtown Portland. This is, as it were, mixed together. I’ve never seen such a university. I felt there is close to this town, especially when I watched a volleyball game at PSU. There were many specters who cheered a team of PSU very eagerly. I went to three colleges, and they have very strong characters.

Finally, Columbia river Multnomah falls impressed me. First, when I saw Columbia river for the first time, I was astonished because of the size. I thought it was like a lake rather than a river. It was enormous and majestic. I seemed to be encouraged by this river. Next, Multnomah falls were awesome. This nature was different from Spokane. Timothy said that Portland was humider than Spokane, so we looked at trees which we couldn’t see in Spokane. This was similar to Japanese nature,so it reminded me Japan. Of course, waterfall was beautiful. However, it was pity that it was so muddy because of rain that I couldn’t go a top of the falls. I climbed a steep path very hard, but I had to give up to go advance the road. I was very shocked by it,but I’m satisfied to see great waterfalls.

This Portland trip help me to experience new things thanks to Colombia George Discovery Center, three colleges where I went and a cool nature. I had a amazing time with my friends, teachers and adviser and felt different cultures. This trip will be unforgettable memory for me.

Fabulous Southwest Trip

The Southwest trip was absolutely amazing because I leaned the culture of the area a lot. I spent 7 days in the southwest and I impressed by people who live there and by their culture. These things were totally different from Japan and the people there preserved their traditions carefully. I talk to a lot of Americans and I saw wonderful nature during the trip. There are three absolutely wonderfu and amazing places that I enjoyed.     First, I went to a lot of museums and all of them were very interesting. I especially liked The Museum of International Folk Art. The museum has more than 130,000 objects from more than 100 countries! My favorite object was a smiling skeleton doll. This object’s theme was Day of The Dead. When I saw it, I remembered COCO which is a Pixar movie. I also liked The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist and she painted a lot of flowers and nature. I think her paintings are brimming with kindness ...

Respectable Voice of The Japanese American

Respectable Voice of The Japanese American Chisato Fujii             When I saw this poem, I felt strong feeling of this poet like “I am an American,” and I also felt this poet’s voice like “Why am I not treated as an American?” I’ve never lived in this period of world war Ⅱ , and of course, I’ve never experienced this suffering and war, but I could feel people’s voice of this period thanks to this poet. Without these Japanese Americans’ voices, I couldn’t feel and understand their feeling and thought. When I understand this poem’s meaning, this poem made me sad, but I also understood Japanese Americans were proud of themselves in the middle of the war. I respect them and am proud.
