It was a gorgeous traditional holiday. I was so happy to experience such a big event in the US; I learned more American culture. I was impressed by many things, such as a big scale celebration, traditional food and holy prayer.
First of all, I was very surprised at such a big scale celebration. At the host family’s house, I watched the TV show which broadcast the big parade in New York City. There were many big balloons, marching bands and super stars in the US. It was like the Disney show! Also, one of my friends went to Idaho and there was the count down for Thanksgiving days at midnight; at the moment, it was launched wonderful fireworks. It reminded of me the New Year’s Day in Japan; it showed how big the event thanksgiving scales is.
Then, it was a wonderful traditional dinner. What I was most surprised at was of size of the meal. It was an enormous dinner; there were the turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, carrot salad, chocolate, fruits and so on. The table was filled with the wonderful meal; I really enjoyed seeing and eating the meal. In addition, I made “Turkey cookies” with my host mother. When I heard the word, “Turkey cookies”, I had imaged the cookies which are mixed with turkey. I didn’t think it would be good; however, I didn’t use any turkey for cookies. Instead of that, I made the turkey from two cookies, chocolate candy and some snacks. It was really cute and yummy! It was a wonderful traditional dinner.
Next, I felt that prayer is most important for this day. My host family was Christian, so I could experience as if I’m a Christian. We went to the church the day before thanksgiving; I prayed for thanks to god, sung some songs and prayed. Also, before eating they said grace and we said the word for thanks one by one even a little boy. They were thankful for family, food and so on. It was a really precious holy time.
I was really happy to participate in such a traditional holiday. Thanks to the celebration, food and prayer, I could understand American culture more. Also, it was a great opportunity to give thanks deeply.
