Valuable 4 days

It was a valuable opportunity to enjoy and learn and a lot. Portland is a historical and beautiful city. On the other hand, it is a metropolitan city which has many high building for business and big shopping mall. I had a great time in this city.

We had opportunities to interact with many students. First, I visited students who are interested in Japan at Columbia Basin College. I was surprised at the students, because they are enthusiastic about leaning about Japan. I could know the pleasure of sharing difference in culture and teach them about Japan. Japan locates far from America. Of cause, there are a lot of cultural differences between Japan and America. Almost all of the student have never been to Japan. I was glad to teach them many Japanese cultures. Also, I could know about American culture and American students. It was very fun. Second, I visited an international school. Students learn English in there same as us. They each have different nationality, such as Saudi Arabian, Korean, and Japanese. I was impressed that their attitude of learning English. They aren’t afraid of mistakes and they mention what they think all the time. I should follow them. To visit many school is my precious memory.

Portland has a history deeply related to Japanese. I’m really impressed at Japanese-American Memorial. There are a lot of poems on stones which are written their feeling. The poems each include deeply meaning. I was moved one of them. It is “Going home, feeling cheated, gripping my daughter’s hand.” This poem seems to express confusing and uneasiness. From this poem, I could guess how discrimination toward Japanese-Americans was terrible and their life was miserable. In Japan, we have not learn about Japanese-American a lot even though we are related to them. I think Japanese should learn about it more. Therefore, it was great opportunity for me to learn.

Portland has not only a sad history, but also an interesting history. This is about John McLoughlin who established and contributed to Oregon. We visited his old house. It was an amazing experience for me, because I could enter the famous and great person’s house. Also, I was able to learn life in those days. It was fun experience.

In conclusion, I learned and enjoyed a lot. It's the memory of a lifetime. I have never forgot what I learned and a lot of impressive experiences.

Fabulous Southwest Trip

The Southwest trip was absolutely amazing because I leaned the culture of the area a lot. I spent 7 days in the southwest and I impressed by people who live there and by their culture. These things were totally different from Japan and the people there preserved their traditions carefully. I talk to a lot of Americans and I saw wonderful nature during the trip. There are three absolutely wonderfu and amazing places that I enjoyed.     First, I went to a lot of museums and all of them were very interesting. I especially liked The Museum of International Folk Art. The museum has more than 130,000 objects from more than 100 countries! My favorite object was a smiling skeleton doll. This object’s theme was Day of The Dead. When I saw it, I remembered COCO which is a Pixar movie. I also liked The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist and she painted a lot of flowers and nature. I think her paintings are brimming with kindness ...

Respectable Voice of The Japanese American

Respectable Voice of The Japanese American Chisato Fujii             When I saw this poem, I felt strong feeling of this poet like “I am an American,” and I also felt this poet’s voice like “Why am I not treated as an American?” I’ve never lived in this period of world war Ⅱ , and of course, I’ve never experienced this suffering and war, but I could feel people’s voice of this period thanks to this poet. Without these Japanese Americans’ voices, I couldn’t feel and understand their feeling and thought. When I understand this poem’s meaning, this poem made me sad, but I also understood Japanese Americans were proud of themselves in the middle of the war. I respect them and am proud.

My Unbelievable Southwest Trip

I experienced a lot of amazing things for seven days with my absolutely wonderful teachers and friends from October 15-21 and learned a lot of Southwest culture, history, and nature. For example, we went to about 12 museums and facilities, such as the Pueblo Cultural Center, the University of Mexico, and some churches in New Mexico and Arizona. Therefore, I kept busy on the trip, but it became something I have never experienced because everything I saw was new to me. There are three things that especially impressed me. First, I was attracted to the buildings of New Mexico. These were really different from Spokane, Boston, or Washington D.C. For example, I went to Old Town in Albuquerque. Then I noticed that almost all the buildings were made of adobe. Adobe means mud brick in Spanish, so the buildings I saw were brown and some parts were air blue. I felt comfortable there. I also saw a plaza and a church which were adobe style buildings. The plaza is the most central part in Old T...
