The meal of common people |
This presentation will show how Japanese food culture greatly changed in the Heian (781-1185), Edo (1603-1863) and Meiji (1868-1912) Eras. In the Heian Era, there are big differences between aristocrats’ and common
people’s lives. Common people ate poor quality meals. However, the style of
their meals developed into the basic Japanese food of the present. Also, there
were also some manners when people ate a meal. The presenter will demonstrate these manners by showing how chopsticks are properly used. Entering the Edo Era, common people started to enjoy their
meals such as tempura, grilled eel and soba. After the Meiji Era, Western food
was introduced to Japan. Japanese food gradually developed, so people spent an
enjoyable life.
