Traveling in Portland
is beneficial to study about the U.S. Portland is a big city, so many people go
to Portland for shopping or for business. However, it is also a good place to
learn history. Through this trip, I went to many places and all of them had interesting
history. You can learn a lot of interesting histories in Portland. Especially,
history about Lewis and Clark, the relationships between settlers and Native
Americans, and Japanese-Americans in World War II are very significant facts to
learn in Portland.
First of all, Portland is a good place to learn about Lewis and Clark. Lewis and Clark were leaders of the Corps of Discovery which was sent to Oregon by President Thomas Jefferson to survey the lands. In Portland, there are a lot of museums about them. In these museums, you can see the items they used such as furs for trade, or journals of the survey. One of the interesting exhibits is a wagon. During the survey, they used wagons to carry items. In the museum, you can see the replica of the wagon they used. Also, you can lift the wagon to know how heavy the wagon is. Seeing these exhibits, you can learn how hard the journey was.
Secondly, you can learn the relationships between settlers and Native Americans. Native Americans and settlers are always related in U.S. history. Sometimes they helped settlers by teaching which plants they could eat or by drawing maps for settlers. In some museums in Portland, you can see some items settlers learned from them such as canoes. Also, you can learn how important Natives Americans were for settlers. In the museum, you can see a lot of trading items such as furs, blankets, or silver. Settlers got food or items by trading with Native Americans. These items tell you the relationship between Native Americans and settlers.
Finally, the Japanese-American memorial is one of the most thoughtful places in Portland. This memorial is for Japanese-Americans in World War II. Most Japanese-Americans were committed into internment camps during WWII and were treated badly. In the memorial, you can see some poems written by Japanese-Americans and they show Japanese-Americans’ sadness or anger during the war. For example, one of the poems, “Sure, I go to school. Same as you. I’m an American” shows writer’s sadness that he wasn’t treated as an American. Also, you can see stone monuments of Japanese-Americans. On the stone, some Japanese-American pictures are curved. Some pictures are armies of Japanese-American boys, and others are Japanese-American children. All of their facial expressions tell us their strong emotion. When you stand in this memorial, you can feel their sad experiences.
To conclude, Portland has a lot of reflective places. Portland is a big city, and many high-rises stand on the city. There are also many shopping malls, so it is a good place to shop. However, when you see the city carefully, many interesting history are hiding.
