The Washington
State University visit gave me opportunities to have a broader point of view
and know about IALC (Intensive American Language Center).
First of all, we could know why many foreign people came to WSU, what they wanted to learn. It was a great opportunity to contact with such international students. Students who were my partners were from Saudi Arabia and Brazil, and they told me that they came to the U.S to study engineering and accounting. One of a Saudi Arabia students said that he wanted to help his father who owned his own oil company, so he came here to study accounting. Each student had different reasons to come and study at WSU, but it was clear that they had their definite goals and high motivation.
At lunch time, we shared our own cultures and our traditions. By chance, on September 23th was the national day of Saudi Arabia, so there were many Saudi Arabians who wore traditional clothes. “In general, most of nine to eleven years old boys have clothes as a sign of being a man, and Saudi Arabia men wear clothes on such a traditional day. On such a national day or a wedding they celebrate it by dancing with having a sword with the clothes,” one of my Saudi Arabian friends said by showing a picture. It is an interesting aspect of diverse country’s people gathering. Indeed, that is a good point of entering IALC on a point of sharing our culture.
Next, WSU has a great academic system and facilities. One of a wonderful academic systems is IALC. In fact, IALC students are not WSU students yet, so the system is a preparatory place for them. It provides them to take English classes for 10 months to fortify their inadequate English skill before taking regular classes with WSU students, after that they can take major classes with WSU students in a main campus. The most surprising thing was some students couldn’t speak English before they came to the U.S., but they can be supported thanks to the IALC. In addition to that, there are a lot of great facilities and systems such as a big football field, a museum, borrowing bicycles and assembly space where they can enjoy playing games or watching TV. There is also a delicious ice cream shop at WSU, so we can eat it every day. These wonderful facilities would greatly help students, make them feel refreshed and encourage them to study hard.
This visit made me interested in studying at WSU. I had thought that this time would be a final chance to study abroad in the U.S. for me, though, I was aware that I had many options and what I choose depends on me. The WSU visit gave me a new suggestion, direction and idea. To sum up, this time connected me to have a broader point of view and think about my future again.
