I had a great time with elementary school students. They came to Commons to learn Japanese culture. I taught them how to use chopsticks and Japanese numbers. It is difficult for us to teach these because they didn’t want to study. Numbers are kind of study, so they were bored. Also, they cannot concentrate on one thing for a long time because they are kids. I took an education program in Japan. I thought it is the most difficult point to teach English grammar. However, it is also difficult to make them concentrate on one thing. At first, they can catch big snacks to use chopsticks. After 1 minute, they cannot catch anything because their holding form is incorrect. Then, they were not interested in this. Therefore, I have to teach them how to use chopsticks correctly, and to think interesting way to teach this. I found the way to teach how to use chopsticks. When I said “ Please hold chopsticks like a pen,” they can hold correctly. I was very happy because they can understand what I said. So, I think they need examples. It is very helpful for them. When I went to SFCC, the teacher gave us many examples. It was very helpful for me. I am kind of like a child because English is not my first language.
Also, I though American boys are very shy. During lunch time, I asked many questions. But they speak very fast and short. I cannot communicate with them. Now, I regret it because it was a good opportunity. My motto is “grasp the opportunity”. I don’t know it is correct, but I saw it on my electric dictionary. Anyway, I have to spend a great time whether it is difficult or not.
These were very good for me because I could notice some things such as examples are helpful to learn and I have to grasp the opportunity. Therefore, I spent a great time with them.
