On September 20, I had a Language Culture
Days class so I could talk with some people who volunteer in Spokane. In fact,
I had never joined volunteering in Japan so I had no idea about it. However,
this meeting was changed me. I learned many things from their stories so I
realized new ideas and my feeling volunteering.
First of all, I
could talk with Gina who is volunteering at Women's and Children's Free
Restaurant. This community serves meals only women, children and young boys the
reason why aren't men served is at the time Women's and Children's Free
Restaurant was founded, there were many meal problems for women and families.
That means women and children who live in poverty are most vulnerable, some
living in or trying to escape from domestic violence. I really surprised at how
to get food to make meals. These foods are about 90 percent donated from general
people. I think it is rare in Japan so I was impressed by their hospitality.
Then we, Extension students will donate some food to this community.
Secondly, I
could talk with Chris who has joined volunteering when he was a high school
student. Now, he is volunteering a lot of time, at school and at an orphanage.
I asked him, what did you learn from volunteering? He immediately answered my
question that I found myself by volunteer work. Volunteering is a good
opportunity to meet many people then, we can learn many cultures and thinking
of other people also we can realized what I am. I was really impressed by these
words. Volunteering is not only for the beneficiaries but also for me.
Finally, I think
volunteering is difficult for people who don't join volunteering because these people don't know very well what
is volunteering, and what kinds of people there are? Also, I think the
beneficiaries have some confusion because when I was helped by someone, I had
two feelings; gratitude and confusion. Then, I think it is most important to
volunteer so that both the people who are beneficiaries and the volunteer have
gratitude and heart which can accept feelings and culture of other people.
In
conclusion, I could learn a lot of ideas about volunteering through this
meeting so I'm now interested in volunteering. I want to join volunteering not
only in Spokane but also in Japan.
