Keep University and College Wired!

Portland, Oregon was awesome! I had a wonderful time at the Portland trip. I visited many places and I saw a lot of interesting things. I can’t choose what the best memory is for me but I was especially impressed by the university and colleges. I visited three wonderful university and colleges such as Columbia Basin College (CBC), Reed College and Portland State University (PSU) during this trip. I was very impressed by each school’s amazing characteristics.

First, I visited CBC in Pasco, Washington to talk with students. There were more students who take Japanese class than I expected. The Japanese class’s teacher was so unique and students really like her. This college was not so huge but there were high school students who participate in the Running Start program. I was surprised that there were also many high school students in Japanese class. Japan doesn’t have the Running Start program system, so I was really curious about this system. In this college, I could learn one common aspect of the American education system.

Second, I visited Reed College in Portland, Oregon. This college looks like Harvard University. This school was not so huge and there were just 1,400 students. Each class has around 10 students, so it is easy to communicate between teacher and student. This college focuses only on learning, so students work very hard. However, students really enjoy their studies and this college because this college has a lot of surprising systems. One of them was an Honor system. It means teachers trust students and students have responsibility by themselves. For example, Reed College students can take test s whenever they want to take and teachers don’t give grades to students at all. Student can get many comments from teachers instead of grades. At first, I couldn’t believe that. In Japan, there are absolutely nothing like the Honor system. This college really fascinated me because this college is really good for students. If I were smart, I would go to this college.

Third, I visited one more amazing University. It was Portland State University. This university was so huge and there were a lot of students. Moreover, this university is located downtown. I was really surprised by the number of International students. There were 1, 700 International students. This University also had an unique system. I was most surprised by their electronic system. This university was very active to save energy, so there were some unique systems to save energy. For example, running machine to exercise in the gym contributes making electricity. When students run on the running machine, this running energy changes into electricity for this university. To exercise in this university’s gym is not common for Japanese university students. It was a big different from American students and Japanese Students.

CBC, Reed College and PSU were really interesting. Through these schools, I learned American student life and many differences compared to Japanese universities. After visiting American school s, I always consider that Japanese university students should study more and I also realize how I didn’t study hard in Japan. All students are busy because of part- time jobs or outings. However, students shouldn’t forget the reason why they are studying in university or college. To study hard is a student’s work for, so let’s study hard!!

Fabulous Southwest Trip

The Southwest trip was absolutely amazing because I leaned the culture of the area a lot. I spent 7 days in the southwest and I impressed by people who live there and by their culture. These things were totally different from Japan and the people there preserved their traditions carefully. I talk to a lot of Americans and I saw wonderful nature during the trip. There are three absolutely wonderfu and amazing places that I enjoyed.     First, I went to a lot of museums and all of them were very interesting. I especially liked The Museum of International Folk Art. The museum has more than 130,000 objects from more than 100 countries! My favorite object was a smiling skeleton doll. This object’s theme was Day of The Dead. When I saw it, I remembered COCO which is a Pixar movie. I also liked The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist and she painted a lot of flowers and nature. I think her paintings are brimming with kindness ...

Completely amazing trip

I had a good time visiting the Southwest USA with Extension students from 15 to 21, October. It was an education trip and I experienced new things and there was a lot of nature which is comfortable for me. I was looking forward to going on the Southwest trip for a long time. I have image that the Southwest is very hot but this place was cold than Spokane. It was interesting that the temperature was totally different in the same place. There were three emotions that I experienced on this trip. First, I was moved by the beautiful landscape of the Grand Canyon. It is absolutely enormous. When I look down the cliff, I remembered the teacher's caution for us that there are lots of people who die and I scared. I and my roommate wanted to see the sunrise so we tried to got up at 4:00 a.m. and then we could see the sunrise which was really fabulous. After that, we decided to rent a  bicycle but we changed our mind and because we had lots of time. Surprisingly, we walked 10 miles aro...

My Unbelievable Southwest Trip

I experienced a lot of amazing things for seven days with my absolutely wonderful teachers and friends from October 15-21 and learned a lot of Southwest culture, history, and nature. For example, we went to about 12 museums and facilities, such as the Pueblo Cultural Center, the University of Mexico, and some churches in New Mexico and Arizona. Therefore, I kept busy on the trip, but it became something I have never experienced because everything I saw was new to me. There are three things that especially impressed me. First, I was attracted to the buildings of New Mexico. These were really different from Spokane, Boston, or Washington D.C. For example, I went to Old Town in Albuquerque. Then I noticed that almost all the buildings were made of adobe. Adobe means mud brick in Spanish, so the buildings I saw were brown and some parts were air blue. I felt comfortable there. I also saw a plaza and a church which were adobe style buildings. The plaza is the most central part in Old T...
