Volunteering and Myself

We Joined "Spokane River Clearn Up"
My image of “volunteer” was absolutely changed through the LCD discussion in the conversation class last Tuesday. People who experienced many kinds of volunteer work came to MFWI, and we asked them lots of questions. Their opinions and minds were new and interesting to me. Thanks to this wonderful opportunity, I got used to be interested in volunteering more than before.
At first, I thought volunteers helped only poor people. However, I found my idea was not correct at all. Not only to help people who do not have enough money; I learned there are many kinds of volunteers in the U.S: for example, to take part in Blooms day and Spokane River Clean Up is also volunteering. Volunteers help other people, but beneficiaries are not always poor. It was a new idea to me.
I thought that a view of volunteers is also another different point from mine. A man said, “To Volunteer is a duty as an American.” I was really impressed by what he said. I have never taken part in volunteering, so I did not come up with such a great idea. In Japan, the number of volunteers is not so often. On the other hand, there are lots of people who join volunteering in this country. Japanese, including me, have to volunteer positively and need more responsibility as Japanese.
Another surprising system was a free restaurant. I talked with two people who had worked there. According to them, women’s rights have improved so much compared to before; however, they said some women still have problems like domestic violence. If women and their children do not have enough money to buy food under such a serious situation, they can get and eat food without paying at the free restaurant. In Japan, there are no free restaurants, so I never heard the system before. At first, I was surprised the idea, but I think it is really helpful for women who have a difficulty.
Before talking with the guests, I was not interested in volunteering so much. However, my image about volunteers changed a lot by understanding some differences such as kinds of, views, and systems between the U.S. and Japan. Actually, I will join Spokane River Clean Up next month. I am really looking forward to it, and I want to learn something new through the experience.

Unforgettable Southwest Trip

I went on a totally amazing Southwest trip with my classmates. The trip was my first time to go to the Southwest so everything was new to me. Sarah, Anikke and Bethany came with us. They made our trip more exciting. I’m happy I could go on this trip with them and I had a lot of great experiences. First, I really enjoyed New Mexico. It was chilly but not too cold. I went to the Old Town in  Albuquerque, New Mexico. I liked the Old Town because there are many cute things and good restaurants in there. For example, I found a gate that was decorated with a lot of red chili peppers. I had never seen anything like that before so I was very surprised and it looked like a lot of flowers from a distance. The red chili peppers were absolutely gorgeous. Not only that, I found a great restaurant. I forgot the name of the restaurant but they have really delicious Mexican food. They gave me some Mexican chips for free and recommended that I eat the chips with honey. I really like Mexican ...

Fabulous Southwest Trip

The Southwest trip was absolutely amazing because I leaned the culture of the area a lot. I spent 7 days in the southwest and I impressed by people who live there and by their culture. These things were totally different from Japan and the people there preserved their traditions carefully. I talk to a lot of Americans and I saw wonderful nature during the trip. There are three absolutely wonderfu and amazing places that I enjoyed.     First, I went to a lot of museums and all of them were very interesting. I especially liked The Museum of International Folk Art. The museum has more than 130,000 objects from more than 100 countries! My favorite object was a smiling skeleton doll. This object’s theme was Day of The Dead. When I saw it, I remembered COCO which is a Pixar movie. I also liked The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist and she painted a lot of flowers and nature. I think her paintings are brimming with kindness ...

Completely amazing trip

I had a good time visiting the Southwest USA with Extension students from 15 to 21, October. It was an education trip and I experienced new things and there was a lot of nature which is comfortable for me. I was looking forward to going on the Southwest trip for a long time. I have image that the Southwest is very hot but this place was cold than Spokane. It was interesting that the temperature was totally different in the same place. There were three emotions that I experienced on this trip. First, I was moved by the beautiful landscape of the Grand Canyon. It is absolutely enormous. When I look down the cliff, I remembered the teacher's caution for us that there are lots of people who die and I scared. I and my roommate wanted to see the sunrise so we tried to got up at 4:00 a.m. and then we could see the sunrise which was really fabulous. After that, we decided to rent a  bicycle but we changed our mind and because we had lots of time. Surprisingly, we walked 10 miles aro...
