I have experienced changing cultures. I have felt a lot of things so it is sometimes makes me confused, but I think it is good to realize differences. Also when my awareness must change all at once, it is difficult to change again.
When I went back to Japan, I forgot a few normal things. I forgot to take off shoes at my house because I didn't take off shoes at my dormitory. I realized it was a little strange. Also when I went outside with my friends, I looked to the left to check for cars. However, in Japan the right side is the way the cars come. I started to walk and my friends said to me, "Be careful!" Then I realized I was wrong. I thought it was normal, but it was American culture, so my sense was still in the U.S.
When I came back to the U.S., I also was reminded of many things of American culture through life in the U.S. When I went shopping in Spokane, the cashier said, "Have a good day!" but I didn't expect the cashier to say something. In Japan most of the cashiers don't say anything, so I was surprised by it and I didn't know what I should say to her. Therefore I didn't say anything. After shopping, my friend and I took a bus to go back to our dormitory. When the bus was near MFWI, I was looking for the button to stop the bus. In Japan, we push a button when we get off the bus. However, there was no button and I found the line instead . My habit was totally Japanese so it was difficult to change cultures and customs.
If one's cultural awareness changes and becomes accustomed to another country's culture at once, it will be hard to change again, but you will realize one country's culture and the other country's culture you have been to. I think it is good to understand culture. However, sometimes it will make you confused because you think it is the right thing, but actually it is strange.
