Wonderful Southwest trip

On October 12th to 18th I had a really wonderful time at South west trip.  We visited New Mexico and Arizona states, every thing was wonderful. Santa Fe First is Santa Fe. This city is one of my favorite part in this trip. I have a few reasons why I like Santa Fe.First of all, I like atmosphere of this city. There are many traditional buildings called adobe. Adobe is flesh color or blown ,looks smooth and match beautiful weather. Also, almost gift shops, restaurant in Santa Fe is located this Adobe. Second is Jewelries.In the Santa Fe, some of Native Americans selling Jewelries which made themselves on the streets. Almost jewelries are turquoise or silver. Also they has a pierced earrings, rings, necklace,bracelets,and pendants. If we would like to buy this from them, we can negotiate price with them, and can discount. this is one of my favorite part too.  Finally is old buildings. What's in Vogue

Fashion is improving, developing, and changing gradually. It is not too much to say that Japanese people are highly fashionable about fashion of the world. In fact, there are many fashionable goods in Japan and these goods have influenced foreign countries. The most representative fashion is clothing. Japanese clothes, especially those ”made in Japan”, are very famous textiles. Futhermore, many international women are interested in Japanese cosmetics. Two well-known cosmetics are colored contacts and eye-putti. Nowadays, these cosmetics are necessaries for many women. Hair is a third aspect of fashion. There are many superior beauticians in Japan who specialize in skills and services. The audience will come to see, how useful Japanese fashion is and how Japanese fashion will expand and generate new things in the future.

Feel The Wind

Japan is one of the world’s countries which always uses bicycles in daily life. Bicycles are an important tool to commute to school and work. In fact, many companies suggest employees commute by bicycle, and there are lots of parking lots for bicycles. The rate of ownership of bicycles in Japan is quite high. Whether of high status or not, Japanese use bicycles to go everywhere. Compared to American bicycles, Japanese bicycles have interesting characteristics. This presentation will show how valuable bicycles are in Japan. The audience will understand Japanese bicycle society, bicyclists in daily life, and bicycles in Japan vs. America.

Evolving Fashion of Japanese Youth

Do you know how many fashion styles exist in Japan? The answer is an infinite number. Japanese fashion is always evolving, so new trends are born every year, every season, and every moment. Each of these styles is closely related to people’s personalities because fashion represents individuality for the young of Japan. Japanese fashion can be classified into three large groups known as Konsaba, GAL, and Harajuku. This presentation will show the audience the relationship between fashion and young people’s characteristics, the feature of each of the typical Japanese fashion styles, the evolution of Japanese fashion, and the influences of Japanese trends upon foreign countries. Have Fun Driving

Do you have a car? Car is important for our life. Many people use cars to go to school or the workplace. Each country has its own traffic rules. There are many different traffic rules between Japan and America. Driver have to protect each rules. Sometimes cars have problems. Especially Japan is unsuitable for having car because Japanese cars cost a lot of money. Cars are indispensable for Japan, as they are the backbone of the economy. Most Japanese families own one. Wonderful Experiences

I really enjoyed the South West Trip from October 12 to 18. It was for 7 days, but these days passed by fast. I visited various historical places and had wonderful experiences. It was a good opportunity to know and learn wonderful South West cultures. miraculous staircase First, I was impressed by the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe. The chapel is a former Roman Catholic chapel and it is European style. Both the inside and outside are beautiful and elegant and the atmosphere was solemn. Moreover, it is famous for its “miraculous staircase”. The staircase has no center pole and has 33 stairs. It was also built without nails from wood of an unknown origin. When I saw it, I was impressed by it because it was like a mysterious thing. Unfortunately I couldn’t go up the staircase. I wondered what people made it for. Today's Fabulous Kimono

Do you know much about Japanese kimonos? The kimono plays not only a role as clothing, but also the role of expressing individuality and passing tradition from generation to generation. Recently Japanese people don’t wear kimonos for ordinary occasions. Instead they wear Western clothes. However, there are many occasions such as traditional Japanese entertainment, city events, and festivals when kimonos are displayed. In this presentation, the speaker will explain traditional uses by today’s generation, typical events and types of kimonos in order to help the audience understand Japan’s fabulous kimonos. Hope of Japan ~Passing The Baton~

The summer of 2020, people of the world will be witness to a historical Olympics. In the past, Japan held three Olympic games as a host country and played important roles for the success of the Olympic Games. The Winter Olympic Games which were held in Sapporo showed the internationalism of Japan, the development of Olympic sports, and offered enjoyable games to people all over the world. The Nagano Winter Olympic Games also achieved great success. This past success will influence the hope of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Oka-san ~ alarm for mother problems in Japan ~

Mother. What do you think is the most famous mother problem in Japan? Recently, Japanese media has been picking up on mother problems on TV or newspaper. However, people don’t try to think so much even a close problems around life. The most famous mother problem is single mother because single mothers are increasing recently in Japan. Therefore, the style of mother is changing such as a single mother. Moreover, this issue is related to declining birth rate because women can choose to be a housewife or a business woman today. In addition, the government helps people financially to spend life comfortably. In this presentation, the presenter will explain why being a single mother is very tough, why birth rate is declining and how government will try to solve these problems. Raicho Hiratsuka -Working for equality-

Do you know who started working for women’s equality in your country? Raicho Hiratsuka lived for making equality of women. Women’s gender problems are still discussing in the world. She worked these problems about 100 years ago. Raicho lived in the Meiji era to the Showa era that it is about 130 years ago. She became a feminist and she insisted on problems around women. She also started up an organization for women’s equality. Raicho Hiratsuka thought that women had to have equality with men. Women’s gender problems haven’t solved yet completely however people who lives before our period worked for equality of people. It is the purpose of this presentation to show how Raicho worked for changing situation of women in a society.

Slip Into 1964

In 1896, the magnificant sports event called the Olympics came into being. It inspired people’s admiration and became a symbol of hope. The first Olympics in Japan created new skills and was called “The Science Olympics”. It was just 20 years after World War Ⅱ, so the Tokyo Olympics was a symbol of unity for all the world. Now, in 2020, Tokyo will produce another innovative Olympics. This presentation will illustrate the amazing past Olympics in Japan as well as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which are full of hope. Changing and Traditional Childcare

What is your memory with your family in childhood? Around 30 years ago, children would often help to do housework, but now, children don’t do that. The time to spend with parents is important for children. Now, Japanese style of childcare is gradually changing. There are some differences as the number of working mothers, children’s after school activities, parents being less strict show ways. These changes are some problems. However, the Japanese sleeping style is the same, it’s part of Japanese culture. Some problems should be got better, but cultural style should be taken over. Parents make an effort to take care of children and hope their happiness.

The Japanese Railway: Indispensable for Eternity

What type of transportation do you use everyday? In America, people usually use cars so the U.S. is a big car society. However, Japan has a highly developed public transportation system and the train is the most common form of transportation used. The Japanese train doesn’t have a long history and yet there are a lot of train companies today. Also, there is unique train culture as well as many employees related to the train. In fact, the Japanese train has changing and improving by many efforts of train workers. Not only Japanese but also people from all over the world use these trains. The Traditional Kimono

As you may know, the kimono is traditional Japanese clothing.It is also a treasure and national symbol of Japan. The kimono is necessary for Japanese women to express culture, history, and beauty. The kimono has a deep meaning which symbolizes Japan and it is a form of Japanese art with a long history. Throughout this long history, the kimono has changed to become more fashionable. All generations love it and treasure those of the old days and the present. Wakon ~Proud Japanese Traditional Wedding~

Can you imagine a traditional Japanese wedding? Recently, many Japanese people are turning away from traditional living and new cultures are coming into Japan and  affecting  marriage. Many young people are eager to have a more western wedding ceremony at a church and want to wear a wedding dress. They also think traditional Japanese weddings are old and have strict customs. On the other hand, this old fashion wedding is being revised in a good way. In a traditional wedding, the bride wears a beautiful Japanese dress and special hair style with a Japanese wedding veil. Delightful Days

Extension students traveled to the Southwest for seven days in October. I really enjoyed the trip. There were many histories and nice views. Also, there were many delicious foods, and I ate too much. They were different from the East coast. I had great experienced which I had never experienced before. I really enjoyed Albuquerque, Santa Fe and the Grand Canyon. the University of New Mexico First of all, we enjoyed Albuquerque. In the morning, we visited the Pueblo Cultural Center. There were many exhibits about Pueblos. I learned a lot of histories about them. Their life and ideas were very interesting for me. We also visited the University of New Mexico. There are seven museums and students can watch free movies. I’m so jealous to be able to watch free movies. I ate lunch with a student who went to that university. He wanted to teach Spanish to Japanese people. I was so glad to hear that. I recommended to him to visit my hometown, Osaka to teach Spanish. Moreover, I saw many Ad

Great Time at the Grand Canyon

I had a wonderful time at the Grand Canyon. I was looking forward to going there since I decided to join the Extension program. We were blessed to see the good view although it was sometimes rainy and stormy. We were lucky that we were able to experience all kinds of weather. The experience will be a great memory in my life. I will especially never forget the memories such as impressive view, enjoyable free-time and meeting many people. First of all, I was impressed by many kinds of overwhelming views. I sensed enormous nature and earth`s history. I can`t explain how it is big. I am small if I compare myself with the Grand Canyon. Seeing the history is interesting. I learned many things from many kinds of rocks. For example, we can see old rocks on the bottom and young rocks on the top. One of my favorite views is the view at the Mather Point. Ideas for home life

Technology is necessary for us to live. It has become more common as it becomes more modern. By the way, have you ever used technology in your home? As you know Japan has a lot of high technology, such as cars, bullet trains, games and so on. We not have only these kinds of technology, we also have fascinating technology inside our Japanese homes. This presentation focus on Japanese home technology, such as toilet room, kitchen room and bathing room technology.

Hidden Japanese Religion

The Japanese lives with religion on a daily basis since a long time ago. Most Japanese say that “I don’t have a specific religion”, however, it does not mean that Japanese don’t have religious feelings. Actually, the Japanese live with many religions on a daily basis unconsciously, such as Shintoism and Buddhism. Most Japanese mix religion everyday and it is usual for them. My house is a temple, but surprisingly I went to a Christian junior and senior high school, so I lived with Buddhism and Christian. In addition, Japan tries to accept other religions such as airport. This presentation will show the boundary line of religion and culture is unclear because many religions overlap in daily life, whether it be at school and at the airport.

All Different, All Wonderful : Local Specialty

When you are asked “ What is a specialty of Japan? ”, what do you imagine? Food? Art? Places? There are many answers. Japan stretches north to south and is encircled by the sea and has enormous forests. Thus, the climate and environment are a little different in each prefectures. This effects to a lot of things, and therefore, Japan has a lot of diversity in foods and characteristics. Also people are trying to revitalise their prefecture with using their specialities. Those things are supporting Japan, so knowing specialty is good way to understand Japan well and people would love their prefecture more and more. Garbage Through Time

Japan has mountains of garbage. This means Japan has some garbage problems because of things like the Great East Japan Earthquake and so on. On the other hand, Japan has created various ways of separating garbage through a long garbage history. They have some differences from American ways, and they are very helpful for disposing of garbage effectively. This presentation will show the history of garbage, different ways of separating garbage in Japan and innovative technologies in the world. Many people like a buffet. If there were a country like a buffet, wouldn’t it be nice? Actually, Japan is a buffet country! Japan opened the country to the world about 160 years ago, and has kept changing since then. Japan imports many things from overseas. People call this globalization. Today many people in Japan eat foreign food, they wear western clothes, and they use household items from outside of Japan. Items from other countries have replaced Japanese traditional items. However, many Japanese people still use the traditional tools in spite of globalization. Creative Ways for the 3Rs

Do you do anything to reduce garbage? If you do, what do you do? According to the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, 9,230,000 metric tons of garbage was recycled in 2012. Japan isn’t rich in natural and material resources and people waste many things in Japan. For example, they use 30 billion plastic bags per year. Therefore the Japanese government agencies are promoting the "3Rs" in order to create a sustainable society based on the 3Rs. The 3Rs stand for Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. This presentation shows that there are creative ways to reduce, reuse and recycle garbage in Japan. Standing Here

I stand on a small rock at Grand Canyon. Low white cloud and a lot of irregular rock, Remnant cold rain, Touching my thigh, nothing around me, Slight Chinese and Hangul, a faint shutter sound, Magnificent and mysteries of nature. I will not experience same feelings in the future.

Hidden Heart in Japanese Heritage sites

Do you know why some Japanese Heritage sites was registered as World Heritage sites by UNESCO? The reason is not only historic structures or beautiful scenery, but also there were deep meanings of Japanese ancient people. Japanese ancient people have believed that different kinds of gods exist in all things in nature in ancient times. In addition, they believed in that this idea was always a connection between people and gods. This idea of Japanese ancient people reflected some Japaneses Heritage sites. Mt.Fuji, Itsukushima Shinto Shrine and Kii Mountain are Japanese Heritage sites that show strongly their hidden secret belief. Fabulous Ways to Reduce Food Waste

Japanese people wasted between 5 and 8 million tons of food in 2012, and 2 to 4 million tons came from individual households. Companies wasted between 3 and 4 million tons of food. Don’t you think it is one of the biggest problems to the environment? Recently Food Banks are becoming popular ways to reduce food waste among food companies. In addition, the Japanese government made a unique project to spread information about food waste and to reduce garbage. Many schools that have school lunches are also trying to reduce the food waste with interesting ways. Holidays with family in Japan

Imagine one thing you love? Which do you love the most, the thing or your family? You choose “family”, didn’t you? In most cases, people are brought up by parents from birth, and they spend a lot of time together. People have love and social skills as a human while they come into contact with people. One important contact for children is spending time with family, and holidays are good time for gathering together. In Japan, some holidays are spent with family. However, as Japanese children grow older they tend not to spend some holidays with their family. Additionally, it’s not easy for workers to get holidays off to spend time with family. Beautiful Turquoise

Turquoise I watched the jewelries that a woman sell on markets. My eyes were shining with excitement. The sun was glaring and illuminating the jewelries. Holding out my hands, I felt the jewelries are gorgeous and heavy like gold. Pleasant cheer from tourists. ”beautiful!” Many tourists are satisfied because of the turquoise jewelries.

Japanese Interesting Important Culture: Ainu+Ryukyu

Do you know Japanese tribes? Japan has some interesting native groups. They are the Ainu and the Ryukyu, and the Ainu people lived in Northern Island and the Ryukyu people lived in Kagoshima prefecture and Southern Island. In the past, Japan didn’t include these tribes because they had their own rules and culture. These 2 groups are unique and also different from each other. Completely Different World

Cute Adobe We, MFWI Extension students went on a wonderful trip to South West, in America from October 12th to 18th. It was really amazing. Southwest is also in America, however, I felt as if I were in different country. Everything was quite different from of course Japan and even America, especially the architecture, people, and scenery. First of all, we can see cute Adobe architecture everywhere. Adobe architecture features round edges and the color of walls are earth color and turquoise color. It comes from the idea of mother earth and father sky. I don't know why, yet I feel comfortable and I felt a sense of relief to see them. Surprisingly, there are some colors of the earth color, deep ones, a little dark ones, various reds, and something like that. I didn't find the difference, though. My Best Memories of the Southwest Trip

From October 12 to 18, 2015, we Extension students went to the Southwest. We visited New Mexico and Arizona. The Southwest has a very different climate and culture from Japan and Spokane because it is a very dry area. Therefore we could see many kind of plants and animals, and we ate spicy food every day, and learned history and culture. This trip was very exciting and interesting for me. This is my best memory in my life. We experienced a lot of new thing, such as the Grand Canyon and the University of New Mexico, and I ate Mexican food for the first time.
